1. Impact of the production process


During manufacture and transportation:

  • The basic material, polypropylene (PP), is made mainly from recycled material and is 100% recyclable.
  • The manufactured products are light but strong. This limits the energy used during manufacture and transportation.


  • Suitable for all applications of nidaplast landscaping products where “water” plays a central role. Permeable hard surfacing, rainwater buffering, rainwater infiltration, delayed drainage of rainwater.
  • The ecological aspect is also carefully considered with every application. A geomembrane is attached to nidagravel® that acts as a root-inhibitor and greatly reduces the growth of weeds.

2. Environmentally friendly application


nidaplast eco-garden products contribute to a sustainable water policy. This is because nidaplast eco-garden products reduce the quantity of hard surfaces this enables the base to absorb or evaporate (nidasedum®) rainwater more evenly. This leads to a more balanced groundwater level and thus has a positive impact on water quality.

Flooding has increased in recent years due, in part, to a lack of permeable hard surfacing and the use of materials that only allow the rain to infiltrate the ground slowly. In addition, the rainwater is discharged into the sewer system together with household and industrial waste water (mixed sewers) in order to drain the rain away faster. This is not always the best solution, both with regard to water quantity and water quality.

An increase in hard-surfaced areas means that sewer systems have to process increasingly larger peak quantities of waste water due to the rapid drainage of rainwater. As a result, the sewers are subjected to a heavy hydraulic load which could lead to flooding. In addition, open ditches have disappeared or been re-laid (straightened) in many places in Flanders as a result of which a considerable buffer volume has been lost.

These large amounts of water flowing through the sewers when it rains activate the overflows, as a result of which the excess water overflows from the sewers into the watercourse = sewer overflows. Hence diluted, polluted water finds its way into the environment. In addition, the substantial dilution of the dirty water with the rainwater is not good for the sewage water purification plant. It is easier for water purification plants to purify smaller amounts of seriously polluted water than the same amount of polluted water diluted with rainwater.

This hydraulic overloading of the sewer system can be rectified by giving the unpolluted rainwater the chance to infiltrate the ground or evaporate and thus regulate the groundwater level in a natural way. Because of the 100% permeability of the nidagravel® system the base is given sufficient time to absorb the rainwater. The amount of hard-surfaced ground is restricted and sewer overflows are avoided as much as possible.

nidagravel® provides a sustainable alternative with all the advantages of a solid base and is good for the environment without losing sight of the aesthetic aspect.
